Peel the onion and cut it in half. Stick 6 cloves in each half of the onion and put in a saucepan with the bay leaves and the milk. Gently warm until it is simmering and then leave for 15 minutes. Turn off the heat and leave to stand for a further 15 minutes.
Strain the mixture into a another pan so the onion, cloves and bay leaves are removed. Then add the margarine and reheat. Grate the bread and slowly add the breadcrumbs until the mixture is the desired thickness.
Add salt and pepper and serve straight away.
